The phrase 'teach your technique with the advantage of the rule' popped into my head the other morning. I could not help but wonder if it was something I had heard before, or just another product of my mind working through ideas. After sitting with it, I realised it was likely my intuition pointing me toward the 60-30-10 interior decorating rule, and that it was time to write another short post to explain the crucial role it plays when creating your space! If you have not heard of this rule in interior decoration until now, you are probably not alone. So keep reading!
Now, let me explain the principle in simple terms.
It involves dividing a space into three key parts:
· 60 per cent of the room is the dominant colour (think walls and floors).
· 30 per cent is the secondary colour (think complementing furniture and fabrics).
· 10 per cent is the accent colour (think contrasting with artworks, rugs, cushions, vases and lighting).
It is obvious that the rule should create a harmonious and well-balanced look, ensuring that everything feels cohesive. But the real magic happens when you pair this rule with a customised plan, for example, beginning with a mood board (and in my case a digital board).
You see, even if a brief does not call for loud colour the rule still applies. It is a design method that puts you in control, ensuring that every element in the room contributes to the overall feel, and more importantly reflects who you are!
Whether it is experimenting with colour combinations, merging modern and vintage pieces, or introducing bold accents to a neutral palette, creativity works when you understand the core principles of design. What is evident is that beauty lies in a trained eye, one that knows how to balance an injection of colour together with the artistry of interior decorating and design.
But what if you simply do not have the time or the vision to focus (or learn) the fundamental rules and techniques? That is where a qualified interior decorator comes in. All you need is an idea of what you want, or the confidence to let them select what works best for you.
It always comes back to this for me; interior decorating sits at the heart of what I do but sharing ideas visually and occasionally through words is how I bring my work to life and connect with others. My services are entirely online, with no in-person consultations, making the process uncomplicated and stress-free.
